Albuquerque ACLS Certification & Recertification

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Albuquerque is New Mexico’s largest city and has a population of 521,999 based 2008 U.S. Census estimates. It is the sixth fastest growing city in America, and the Albuquerque metropolitan area is the 57th largest. About half of the whole New Mexico population lives in the Albuquerque metropolitan area. Albuquerque was originally a Spanish town that was founded on the grounds of the oldest farming civilization in North America. It has a unique Native American, Hispanic, and European American history.

The climate of Albuquerque is arid with sunny and dry weather all throughout the year. The city receives an average of 3,420 sunshine hours per year. Almost 300 days per year have extended sunshine. Winters are short but temperatures can drop into the low 20s F to 30 F. Spring is windy and cool at the beginning and becomes warmer toward summer. Spring is also the driest season. Summer temperatures reach from 80 F to the upper 90s F and drops into the low 60s to low 70s overnight. The city receives very little rainfall with an average of 8-9 inches per year of precipitation.

The heart of the city is the Old Town which features historic buildings that demonstrate the roots of the city that date back to 1706. The Old Town features adobe style buildings with flat roofs. There are numerous pueblos around the city that show evidence of the Native American influence. Acoma is one of the largest. It is an adobe village that sits on a rock mesa. It is thought to be the longest continually occupied community in the United States.

The Rio Grande National State Park has 2 miles of trails. The Rio Grande Biological Park has three separate facilities: the Rio Grande Zoological Park, Albuquerque Aquarium, and Rio Grande Botanic Garden. The Rio Grande Zoological Park is on 64 acres of land and features a lion exhibit and several species.

Albuquerque has more than 30 performing arts centers including the KiMo Theater which is a historical landmark. The KiMo Theater hosts numerous performances and has capacity of 700. La Compania de Teatro de Albuquerque is one of the few Hispanic theater companies in the United States and stages several bilingual comedies, musicals, and dramas throughout the year.

Albuquerque is also home to research and educational institutions including the University of New Mexico (UNM), Sandia National Laboratories, and Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute. There is much to do and see in Albuquerque because of its varied history and scenic landscaping.
