About Arkansas

Arkansas became the 25th state in 1836. The state capitol of Arkansas is Little Rock with a population of nearly 190,000 people (2005 Census). Little Rock is also the largest city in the state, with the second largest being Fort Smith, with nearly 83,000 people (2005 Census). The population of Arkansas as a whole is around 2,779,154 (2005 Census). Arkansas is comprised of 52,068 square miles of farmland and forest.

The state flower is the Apple Blossom. The state bird is the Mockingbird. The state insect of Arkansas is the honeybee. Arkansas was originally explored by European explorers such as Spanish Hernando De Soto, and French Henri di Tonti. The first white settlement was founded by Henri di Tonti in 1686, called the Arkansas Post, but it was not until 1819 that Arkansas became a separate entity from the Territory of Missouri. Arkansas is known for its natural and geographic icons such as Hot Springs National Park, and the Buffalo National River in the Ozarks.

Arkansas is known for several famous and historic figures including: Johnny Cash, William Clinton, Douglas MacArthur, J. William Fulbright, John Grisham, Sam Walton, and more. Staying true to its nickname “The Natural State”, Arkansas is largely an agricultural state, with a strong industry lead in food products, lumber and wood products, as well as crops. Popular crops grown in Arkansas include cotton, rice, and soybeans.

Arkansas also has the only active diamond mine in the United States, which is now open to tourists. The geography of Arkansas makes it a prime location for hunting and fishing. There are many lakes and rivers, mountainous areas, as well as prairie, which all have their own tourist and wildlife draws. From vast prairie and farmland flat and rolling, to high peaks such as Magazine Mountain topping at 2,753 feet, Arkansas has unique features and diversity.
