Arlington, Texas located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area is the 50^th largest city in the United States as ranked by the 2008 Census. It is located in Tarrant County and is the seventh largest city in Texas. The city is named after Arlington, Virginia. The population of Arlington is 374,417. Some of the top attractions of Arlington include several national bowling sites, professional sports, and the Arlington Highlands.

Arlington has a humid subtropical climate with summer temperatures of over 100 F and heat indexes occasionally reaching up to 117. Spring and autumn are two of the best seasons for weather in Arlington. Winters are mild with highs around 55 F during the daytime and lows around 30 F to 45 F in the evening.

The Texas Rangers (MLB) and Dallas Cowboys (NFL) are two professional sports teams that are based in Arlington. Superbowl XLV will be hosted in Arlington at the Dallas Cowboy’s new stadium. By 2011, Arlington will host 8 million people per year from all throughout the Southwest due to the expected increase in tourism from the addition of the new stadium. High school football is also very popular in Arlington and in several other parts of North Texas with several fans of all ages.

Arlington features several sports and recreation sites and it is the home to the International Bowling Campus. Arlington is also considered the world headquarters for bowling. The Six Flags Over Texas theme park is a popular recreation destination in Arlington. There is also the Parks Mall, a large retail outlet location. The Arlington Highlands, completed in mid-2007 is a common entertainment destination with places such as Studio Movie Grill, BJ’s Brewhouse, The Improve Theatre, World Market, and several other restaurants and entertainment sites.

Arlington is home the University of Texas at Arlington, the Southeast Campus of Tarrant County College, and Arlington Baptist College. The University of Texas at Arlington has over 28,000 students and offers 190 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from 10 separate colleges. It also has 97,000 alumni that live in the North Texas area.

Arlington is the largest city in the United States without a total public transportation system. A bus system has been shot down three times by voters. Arlington does have transportation systems for demographics such as the elderly and disabled. And the University of Texas at Arlington has its own shuttle service for students.
