Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore is located on the northern Chesapeake Bay in the state of Maryland. It is the largest city in Maryland, and it is located in central Maryland. The population of the city is 637,418 and the metropolitan area has 2.7 million residents. The city was named after Lord Baltimore who was the founding proprietor of the colony of Maryland. It is a major seaport and links the Atlantic Ocean to major Midwestern markets.

The weather of Baltimore is influenced by the nearby Chesapeake Bay and Patapsco River. The city has a total area of 92.1 square miles of which 11.3 square miles is water. Baltimore has a humid subtropical climate. July is the hottest month of the year with average high temperatures of 91 F. The summers are also very humid. January is the coldest month with average highs of 44 F. The city is an urban heat island which makes the city warmer than the outlying areas. The city averages 43 inches of precipitation per year. Thunderstorms happen mostly in spring, summer, and fall.

Baltimore is known as one of America’s “comeback” cities after rebounding from a decline in the manufacturing sector of its economy and a successful switch to a service oriented economy. Johns Hopkins University and Hospital are two of the largest employers in the area. It is home to six Fortune 1000 companies. It has a growing financial sector and a health services sector that employs many residents.

Baltimore residents enjoy watching local professional sports and Baltimore has a long sports history. The Baltimore Orioles are a MLB team that was founded in 1954. The Baltimore Ravens are the most recent NFL team to play in the city. The Ravens won a Super Bowl in 2000 and are a competitive NFL franchise today.

Downtown Baltimore has several attractions. The Davis Planetarium has 350 projectors with several shows. The Maryland Science Center is set on the water and is a popular site for children. There are live science exhibits and hand-on displays on three floors. The National Aquarium has seven levels and is rated as one of the best family attractions in the world. It has 10,500 aquatic animals and 560 species. There is also a 64-foot tall model of an Amazon rain forest on the building.

The National Park at Fort McHenry is one of Baltimore’s several historical sites. The site was the location of Baltimore’s victory over the British in the War of 1812 and it was the site that the National Anthem was written. The Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum is another popular site that honors the legacy of Babe Ruth and features numerous exhibits and memorabilia. Baltimore has several more historical sites besides these popular historic locations.
