It has the third largest number of Fortune 500 headquarters in its city limits. It is the economic center of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area that has a total population of 6.45 million as of 2009. Dallas is also the largest inland city in America without any access to sea. It is a historical center for the oil and cotton industries and a major inland port. The city is 30 miles from Fort Worth, another major city in Texas. Dallas is a leader in business and technology in the region. The economy of Dallas is supported by numerous industries including defense, technology, biotechnology, semiconductors, telecommunications, and information technology. 43 percent of Texas’s high tech workers are employed in Dallas. The city is also home to 15 billionaires. There are 12 Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the city including Dean Foods, AT&T, Blockbuster Inc. , Tenet Healthcare, Southwest Airlines, and others. The city was nicknamed “The Silicon Prairie” because of its large number of technology companies. Dallas also has more shopping centers per-capita than any other major city. Some of the top schools in the area include the University of Texas Southwestern, which is home to four Nobel Laureates and a part of the University of Texas system. The program is highly selective and admits only 200 students per year. Other universities in Dallas include Dallas Baptist University, the University of North Texas at Dallas, and several others. Dallas has a humid subtropical climate that creates hot and humid summers with mild winters. The north central region of Texas is known for its very hot summers and temperatures are close to the Mojave Desert in comparison at their hottest. Snowfall occurs two to three days per year on average. Dallas also receives 33.3 inches of rainfall per year. Dallas has had influence on Southwestern American cuisine and is known for its delicious barbecue and authentic Mexican cuisine. Tex-Mex cuisine has also been heavily influenced by Dallas food culture. Some of the best steakhouses in the nation are located in Dallas. There is also a prominent Arts District in Dallas that features numerous museums and music venues. The Dallas Museum of Art is a 350,000 square foot facility with 23,000 works of art from around the world. The Morton H.
