About Delaware

Delaware became the 1st state in 1787. The state capitol of Delaware is Dover with a population of 34,288 people (2005 Census). Wilmington is the largest city in the state, with 72,786 people (2005 Census). The population of Delaware is 897,934 (2010 Census). Delaware is comprised of 1,954 square miles of coastline, river front, and flatland. The state flower is the peach blossom. The state bird is the blue hen chicken. The state insect of Delaware is the ladybug.

Delaware is said to have been discovered by Henry Hudson in 1609. In 1610 Virginian Captain Samuel Argall named the state after his own colony’s governor Baron De La Warr (Thomas West) and thus Delaware was born. Both Swedish and Dutch settlers tried to settle in Delaware but were unsuccessful ultimately, and eventually England took over in 1664. The area known as the "Three Counties" was transferred in 1682 to William Penn.

Delaware remained a separate state during the Revolutionary War, and was the very first state to ratify the United States Constitution in 1787, making them the first state. Over time, Delaware has become one of the largest chemical industry resources in the United States. Manufactured products and agriculture are two prominent industries for the state, and their contribution to the United States as a whole is great. Delaware is known for its advancements in the food-canning industry and broiler chicken farms, which supplies many Eastern United States markets.

Delaware offers tourists a unique historical opportunity to visit historic landmarks that paved the way for the United States. Among the sites is Holy Trinity Church, which is the oldest protestant church still in use in the United States. The church was erected in 1698. Prominent historical and famous figures that hale from Delaware include E.I. du Pont, Thomas Garrett, Henry Heimlich, Annie Jump Cannon, Valerie Bertinelli, George Read, and others.
