| Detroit, Michigan Detroit is the largest city in the state of Michigan and a major port on the Detroit River. The city is the eleventh most populous city in the United States with 912,062 residents. The Metro Detroit metropolitan area has 4,425,110 making it the eleventh largest metropolitan area in the nation. It is the only major city in the United States that is north to Canada. In 1950 the city was the fourth largest in the U.S.A. , but the decline of the manufacturing sector and shift to the suburbs caused the city’s population to move. The city was founded on July 24, 1701 by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. The name comes from the French word for strait. Detroit’s terrain is mostly flat with weather that is affected by the Great Lakes, and it has a humid continental climate. The winters are very cold with annual snowfall and summers are warm to hot. There are 43.3 inches of snowfall on average per year in Detroit with 30.97 inches of rain annually. The seasons are clearly defined. Detroit is the home to the Big Three automakers: General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. The city is a global trading hub and several international law firms have offices in the city. 80,500 people work in downtown Detroit and there are four thousand factories in the city. The economy of Detroit has suffered from the 2007 recession. The recession has caused many layoffs from the Big Three automakers and driven the unemployment rate higher. However, this is not the first time that Detroit has suffered an economic setback due to low automobile sales, and business leaders have already taken steps to rebound the economy by opening new lithium ion battery manufacturing plants and other manufacturing sectors. Detroit underwent a revitalization project to restore some of its popular tourist sites. The People Mover is a computerized transit system with 13 stations and several public commissioned works of art that are viewable from the train. Hart Plaza is next to the newly renovated Renaissance Center which is the headquarters of General Motors. The Hart Plaza is also home to several festivals and parades. Detroit has several local attractions that are worth a trip or two. The Detroit Zoo has 1,300 animals and 286 different species. The Cranbrook Institute of Science is a natural history museum on the Bloomfield Hills. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has international acclaim and plays from September to May at Orchestra Hall. There is also an active local theater community that hosts shows at restored theaters throughout the city. |
