El Paso, Texas

El Paso is the county seat of El Paso County and is located on the western edge of Texas. The city is one of Texas’s largest and its metropolitan area covers all of El Paso County. The metropolitan area has a population of 751,296. The city is home to the University of Texas at El Paso and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. The city is in close proximity to Mexico and serves as an entry point to the country.

The geography of El Paso is unique. The city has a total area of 250.5 square miles. It sits at 3,800 feet above sea level with the North Franklin Peak being the highest peak in the city at 7,192 feet. The North Franklin Peak is tall enough to be seen from up to 60 miles in each direction. The Thunderbird is a red clay formation that is a famous attraction. El Paso has the largest urban park in the United States: the 24,000 acre Franklin Mountains State Park.

El Paso has a warm arid climate with very hot summers and mild dry winters. El Paso receives 83 percent of the available daylight hours and is nicknamed “The Sun City. ” The sun shines 302 out of 365 days per year. Temperatures can reach 100 F or more as a result of the longer sun exposure. The average annual rainfall is 9.35 inches and because of the high elevation of the city it is capable of receiving snowfall.

El Paso is a historically majority Hispanic city with 80.2% of the population being Hispanic and 17.1% of the city identifying as Caucasian. El Paso was ranked the second safest city with a population greater than 500,000 in 2007.

El Paso is the headquarters for Helen of Troy Limited, a company that manufactures health care products and person care products. The city was once known for its copper industries. In the 80’s, it was known as the “Blue Jeans Capital of the World” until Levi’s and other jeans companies moved out of the city.

Western Refining is another major employer along with Spira Footwear. Seventy Fortune 500 companies have offices in El Paso such as Hoover, Eureka, Boeing, and many others. El Paso is now an important food production and livestock center.

The University of Texas El Paso hosts sporting events at its Sun Bowl Stadium and Don Haskins Center. The Sun Bowl Stadium has a capacity of 51,400 and is home to the UTEP Miners who are a popular local football team. The stadium hosts other sporting events such as soccer matches, and it also hosts concerts.
