About Hawaii Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959. The state capitol of Hawaii is Honolulu with a population of 371,657 people (2000 Census). Honolulu is also the largest city in the state with the second largest being Hilo with 40,759 people (2000 Census). The total population of Hawaii is 1,360,301 people (2010 Census). The state of Hawaii is comprised of 6,423 square miles of islands. The state flower is the hibiscus. The state bird is the Nene (Hawaiian goose). Hawaii was originally discovered by Polynesian islanders from other islands. The first British explorer to visit Hawaii was James Cook who did so in 1778. James Cook called them the Sandwich Islands. In the nineteenth century sugar and later pineapple industries became un-ignorable by the United States. In 1893 then Queen Liliuokalani was deposed, and replaced by Sanford Dole as the president. In 1900 Hawaii became a United States territory, but it took time before it entered the union. Hawaii is likely best known historically for Pearl Harbor, the naval base which was attacked by the Japanese in 1941 which led to the United States entering World War II. Pearl Harbor is still a popular tourist destination because of the memorial and remnants of the naval ships and planes that still loom under the surface. Hawaii is rich in history, beauty and diverse terrain. From lush tropical jungle to pristine sandy beaches, to the largest volcanic mountain in the world (based on volume), Hawaii is a tropical paradise. Best known for its advances and optimum climate for growing tropical fruits such as pineapple, cane sugar, flowers, coffee beans, bananas, macadamia nuts, and more, Hawaii is a rich and fertile ground. Because of the climate and unsurpassed beauty, Hawaii’s primary outside source of income remains tourism. Prominent historical figures and famous people that hale from Hawaii include Don Ho, Bette Midler, Barack Obama, Chad Rowan, Father Damien, and others. |
