Honolulu, Hawaii

Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii on the island of Oahu and is Hawaii’s economic center. It is known as the birthplace of President Barack Obama. The city has a population of 374,676 and it is the most populous city in Hawaii. Honolulu is located within the county of Honolulu and it is known together as the City and County of Honolulu. The name of the city means “place of shelter. ”

Honolulu and the island of Oahu are very popular tourist destinations. The island is bright in the evening with wonderful views of the beach on many of the shoreline hotels. The city has several shopping areas, five-star restaurants, and live performances. The island has several manmade attractions including the Aloha Tower, which was once the tallest building in Hawaii and a popular landmark. The Honolulu Zoo is a world renowned zoo that shows several exotic species.

The surrounding island has several bays and beaches including Waikiki Beach, Hanauma Beach, Sunset Beach, Kaneohe Bay, and Waimea Bay. Waikiki Beach is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hawaii. It is also one of the best surfing locations on the island. Some of the more popular beach activities include snorkeling, diving and swimming. Honolulu is also close to the popular Diamond Head State Monument and Park, an extinct volcano.

The city is known for its high interest in sports and it is considered the fittest city in the United States. Some of the annual races in Hawaii include the Great Aloha Run held on President’s day, the Honolulu Marathon with 20,000 participants every year, and the Honolulu Triathalon which is an Olympic distance triathalon. Some other popular sporting evenets include volleyball, football, baseball, and basketball. High school football is also very popular in Honolulu and the rest of Hawaii.

Honolulu’s performing and visual arts community is also very active with the Hawaii Opera Theatre, a classical music ensemble, and the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra playing live several times during the year. Hawaiian music is also very popular in Honolulu. Music venues include the Neal Blaisell Center Concert Hall, the Hawaii Theatre, and the Waikiki Shell.

The Honolulu Academy of Arts has the largest Asian and Western art exhibit in Hawaii. The Shangri La estate houses the largest collection of Islamic Art that was collected by heiress Doris Duke. The Contemporary Museum is the only contemporary art museum in Hawaii.

Honolulu is an attractive tourist hotspot with a plethora of entertainment and outdoors options to choose from. With a large range of natural and manmade attractions to check out, Honolulu can keep anyone busy.
