About Indiana

Indiana became the 19th state in 1816. The state capitol of Indiana is with a population of 784,118 people (2005 Census). Indianapolis is also the largest city in the state, with Fort Wayne being the second largest with 223,341 people (2005 Census). The total population of Indiana is 6,483,802 people (2010 Census). Indiana is comprised of 35,867 square miles of rolling hills and farmland in much of the state, a glaciated north and sandy dunes along Lake Michigan. The state flower is the peony. The state bird is the cardinal.

First explored in 1679-1680 by French explorers such as Robert Cavelier, Indiana was an important piece of the struggle for North American between the French and British. The British found their victory in 1763. Indiana was an active part in the Revolutionary War and various Indian uprisings. 1794 brought a bit of peace with the victory of General Anthony Wayne, then further in 1811 with Henry Harrison. The nineteenth century brought experimental communities to Indiana under the leadership of George Rapp and Robert Owen.

In recent years, Indiana has become a hub for manufacturing and industry. Products made from iron and steel are heavily produced in Indiana, partly because of the large waterfront area of Lake Michigan. Transportation bodies and vehicles, engines, mobile homes, and structural pieces are all among the most heavily produced items. Agriculture is strong in Indiana with soybeans, wheat, oats, onions, and tomatoes all being a prominent fixture in pastures and farms.

Indiana is also where the majority of building limestone in the United States comes from. Indiana is home to some unique tourist attractions as well. Wyandotte Cave is one of the largest caves in the United States. There are also mineral springs, historic landmarks, and more. There are several prominent historical figures and famous people who are from Indiana. These people include Larry Bird, Bill Blass, James Dean, Lloyd Douglas, Virgil Grissom, Michael Jackson, David Letterman, Wilbur Wright, and more.
