Indianapolis, Indiana

Indianapolis is the largest city in Indiana and also its capital. The population is estimated at 798,382. It is the third largest Midwestern city behind Chicago and Detroit. The area of the city is 361 square miles. Indianapolis is known for the Indy 500 annual race, the Brickyard 400, and as a common host for the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Basketball Tournaments. The economy of Indianapolis has diversified over the past 50 years from its beginnings as a manufacturing city. Indianapolis benefits from tourism and numerous other industries.

The climate of Indianapolis is temperate with an even precipitation distribution throughout the year. The average temperature is 52.1 F. Summers are hot and winters are very cold with low humidity. The area receives 40 inches of rain annually and 23 inches of snow.

Major employers in Indianapolis include Eli Lilly, Anthem Inc. , Duke Reality Group, Dow AgroSciences, Clarian Health, and 200 other major companies. The insurance industry has been a part of Indianapolis’s economic history for many years.

Indianapolis has several modern tourist attractions. The Indianapolis Zoo is located close to the city’s downtown and features 2,000 animals. The zoo sits on 64 acres in White River State Park, a 250 acre urban park directly in the downtown of Indianapolis. The NCAA Headquarters Hall of Fame is also located in the park along with the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art. There is also a waterfront open concert space for 5,000 people in the park. The park is a common destination for weddings, picnics, and concerts.

Other attractions include historical Victorian architecture at the Jacob Whitcomb Riley Home that was built in 1872. Another historical building is the 16 room President Benjamin Harrison Home where there are displays of original Harrison family furniture. The city has a large arts community, and the Indianapolis Arts Center is devoted to making art available for everyone in Indianapolis. It features 13 studios and a 12 acre campus with numerous creative centers.

Indianapolis is has a thriving performing arts community with several venues throughout the city. The Indiana Repertory Theatre hosts 300 performances annually. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra performs at the restored Hilbert Circle Theatre and in several other locations throughout the city. The Indianapolis Civic Theatre is the nation’s oldest continuously active civic theater group that performs at Marian Hall. Other performing groups include the Indianapolis Opera and the Indianapolis Children’s Choir. The Ballet Internationale troupe performs at the Murate Center.
