About Iowa

Iowa became the 29th state in 1846. The state capitol of Iowa is Des Moines with a population of 194,163 people (2005 Census). Des Moines is also the largest city in the state, with Cedar Rapids coming in second with 123,119 people (2005 Census). The total population of Iowa is 3,046,355 people (2010 Census). Iowa is comprised of 55,869 square miles of flat, rich land, and watershed from the northwest to the southeast. The state flower is the wild rose. The state bird is the eastern goldfinch. French explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet were the first explorers to visit the area that is now Iowa in 1673.

In 1803 The United States took control of the areas under the Louisiana Purchase. During the nineteenth century, fighting erupted between the Indians and white settlers. These fights over land eventually led to the Black Hawk War in 1832 and subsequent battles in 1836 and 1837. The present state boundaries were established in 1857 when the capital of Iowa was relocated from Iowa City to Des Moines. Since its establishment, Iowa has been a leader in the agricultural arena.

Now producing around a tenth of the United States total food supply, Iowa’s farms and livestock are invaluable to the Nation; in fact Iowa’s yearly sales of crops and livestock tops over $10 billion. Iowa’s rich Indian history and culture is strong, and there are various places in the state to view some of the artifacts, burial grounds, and historic sites.

Former President Herbert Hoover was from Iowa and his birthplace is one of the popular sites for tourists. There are several famous historical figures and famous people from Iowa. Along with Herbert Hoover, these individuals include Johnny Carson, George Gallup, William “Buffalo Bill” Cody, Glenn Martin, Glenn Miller, Kate Mulgrew, John Wayne, Andy Williams, and others.
