Jacksonville is known for its miles of coastline, sunny climate, several recreation facilities, and numerous economic opportunities. Jacksonville has a humid subtropical climate with four seasons. It has a cool spring and fall, a mild winter, and a warm to hot summer. Jacksonville has experienced one serious hurricane in 1964. It receives 51.3 inches of precipitation per year with an annual average temperature of 68.0 F. The huge area of the city at 874.3 square miles makes the city the largest in land area in the 48 states. Today, Jacksonville has a young population and is commonly rated as one of the best places to live in America. The area is a transportation hub with a major port that is one of the top vehicle landing ports in the nation. There are four airports in the area, three seaports, and a rail system. Lumber, cigars, paper, and wood pulp are major exports from the city. Automobiles and coffee are two major imports. Forbes in 2007 named Jacksonville No. - among the “Top 10 Cities to Find a Job. ” The city has the largest urban park system in the United States with 337 parks on 80,000 acres of land throughout the city. There are several areas for residents to surf, jetski, swim, fish, and sail. Tree Hill Nature Center is five minutes from downtown Jacksonville and sits on 50 acres. The center has numerous nature trails and it hosts environmental education programs for the Jacksonville community. Jacksonville has an active performing arts and music community. The Florida Theater is one of the four remaining high-style movie palaces left in Florida, and it is still active as a performance venue. The Jacksonville Jazz Festival is the second largest jazz festival in the nation. The Tree Hill Nature Center Annual Butterfly Festival is held on the last Saturday of April annually, and community members gather to release 1000 butterflies. The Jacksonville Film Festival that is hosted every May features the latest independent films and documentaries. The films are screened at seven historic theaters in the city. |
