| Kansas City, Missouri Kansas City is the largest city in Missouri and part of the second largest metropolitan area in Missouri as well. It has a population of 475,830 and the metropolitan area has over two million total. Kansas City is very close to the geographic center of the United States and as a result it is sometimes called the “Heart of America. ” It was founded in 1838 and it is located at the junction of the Missouri and Kansas rivers. The city is a Civil War historic site as it was the location of numerous battles, primarily the Battle of Westport. Kansas City is known for its numerous cultural contributions to music primarily through its jazz and blues tradition. Kansas City is nicknamed the “City of Fountains” due to having over 200 fountains in the city, which is supposedly only second to Rome, Italy. The Kauffman Stadium fountains are the largest privately funded fountains in the world. Kansas City also has the second highest number of boulevards in the world, which is second to Paris. As a result, the city has been nicknamed the “Paris of the Plains. ” Kansas City is known for its Power and Light building which features art deco architecture. The Kansas City metropolitan area used to be primarily an agricultural and manufacturing sector, but it has since then expanded to various other industries including telecommunications, finance, and various services industries. It ranks first as a greeting card publisher with Hallmark Cards being based out of the city. Other major industries include frozen food storage and distribution, wheat flour production, and auto and truck assembly. It is one of ten federal regional centers as well and has several local, state, and federal government employers. Because of Kansas City’s location near the geographic center of the United States and proximity to both the Missouri and Kansas rivers, the climate is humid continental and borders on a humid subtropical climate. Kansas City receives moderate precipitation with very humid summers and mild to very cold winters. Temperatures in the summer can exceed 100 F on around 5 days per year and can dip below 0 F on around 4 nights per year in the winter. It is also in “Tornado Alley” where cold air from the Rocky Mountains and north combine with warm air from the Gulf of Mexico to create violent storms. Kansas City has several performing arts companies such as the Kansas City Repertory Theatre. The Starlight Theatre is an 8,105 seat outdoor theater and performing company as well. The Kansas City Symphony plays at a number of venues throughout the year and was founded in 1982 to supersede the Kansas City Philharmonic which was founded in 1933. |
