Las Vegas is the largest city in Nevada and one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. The population of Las Vegas is 558,383 as of 2008. The metropolitan area has a population of 1,865,746. The city is a world renowned center for gambling, tourism, performing arts, shopping, dining, and resorts. It is known as the “Entertainment Capital of the World. ” Las Vegas grew an astonishing 83% between April 1990 and April 2000. The city was established in 1905 and was the most populous city founded in the 20^th century. The city is known for its availability of adult entertainment which has given it the moniker “Sin City. ”

Las Vegas has an arid desert climate and it is surrounded by desert. The area is subject to flash floods. The city is surrounded by mountains. The landscape around the city is rocky, but the city itself has a lot of greenery. Las Vegas has had water conservation problems, and as a result there have been measures to limit garden and lawn watering. The city receives 3800 hours of sunshine and only 4.2 inches of rainfall per year. The summer months are hot and dry with highs of 94 F to 104 F. The winters are short and moderate in temperature. Snow is rare in Las Vegas, but can be seen on the mountains that surround the city.

The economy of Vegas is based mostly on tourism, gaming, conventions, and the retail and restaurant industries. There is also a large entertainment economy that does well from the tourism, and most shows are located in the major hotels of the city. The city headquarters two Fortune 500 companies: Harrah’s Entertainment and MGM Mirage. There are several gaming equipment manufacturers located within the city as well. The city has had constant population growth and the housing construction industry has done well as a result. The financial crisis has created a large amount of foreclosures in the area, however.

The most popular attractions in Vegas are its hotels and casinos. The Las Vegas Strip is a 4.2 mile stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard that the city is most well known for. Some of the largest hotel, casino, and resorts in the world are located on the Las Vegas Strip. The strip features the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, and the Mirage. Some of the most popular free attractions include the water fountains at the Bellagio, the Sirens of TI show at Treasure Island, the volcano at the Mirage, and the Festival Fountain at Caesars Palace.
