Long Beach, California

Long Beach is the fifth largest city in California and is situated in Southern California. It is located in Los Angeles County about 20 miles south of Los Angeles. The population of long beach was 492,682 estimated in 2009. The city is the fifth largest in California. Long Beach sits on the Pacific Coast and has one of the most active shipping ports in the world.

The port does $100 billion in trade annually and occupies 3,200 acres of land and 25 miles of waterfront. It is a major gateway between U.S. and Asian trade. The port won the Environmental Management Award in 2007 for its efforts to reduce pollution.

The oil industry is a strong component of the Long Beach economy as oil is found underground the city and offshore. Some of the other major employers include aircraft, electronic, audiovisual equipment, automobile parts, and furniture companies. Long Beach is home to the headquarters of Epson America, Molina Healthcare, and SCAN Health Plan. Boeing, Verizon, Gulfstream Aerospace, and the Bragg Companies are some more top employers. The climate of Long Beach is a semi-arid Mediterranean climate. Temperatures are moderate year-round in part due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Summers are often foggy and winters are mild. Some attractions include the Long Beach Museum of Art that features exclusively Latin American art, the University Art Museum, and Wyland’s Whaling Walls. The Walls are the world’s largest mural at 116,000 square feet. There are also numerous shops and art galleries in the East Village Arts District in downtown Long Beach.

The Long Beach Symphony Orchestra plays both classical and pop music throughout the year. Long Beach Opera is the oldest professional opera company in the Los Angeles area. It performs throughout the Los Angeles and Orange County areas.

Long Beach has grown because of the technology industries moving to the city, and it looks like Long Beach will continue to be a popular tourist destination with a stable economy.
