Louisville, Kentucky

Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky after it merged with Jefferson County in 2003. It is located at the Falls of Ohio at the Kentucky-Indiana border. The population in 2008 was 557,224 and the metropolitan area’s population was 1,244,696. It was founded in 1778, and by the early 19^th century it had become a major river port. The Portland Canal’s completion in 1830 stimulated economic growth in the area.

The city is known for hosting the Kentucky Derby which has been held since 1875 in the city. It is also a leading gin, tobacco, and whiskey producer. Louisville Slugger baseball bats are also produced in the city. Louisville is located in a Southern state but its culture has been influenced by both Southern culture and Midwestern culture. As a result it is often referred to as the “Southernmost Northern City” in the United States.

Louisville is located in the Bluegrass region. The area used to be mostly swampland which was drained as the city grew. The areas in the north of the city are defined by numerous hills. The climate is humid subtropical and has four distinct seasons. Severe weather happens in early spring and late fall with the occasional tornado.

It is the third largest district in the United States. Louisville is consistently among the top 10 safest large cities. It was ranked as the eighth safest large city in 2006.

The economy of Louisville historically was shipping and cargo base but since then has diversified. The city still has a significant importance to the shipping industry as there is a Worldport global air freight hub for UPS located at Louisville International Airport. Louisville is the 7^th largest inland port in the United States.

Louisville is now a center of health care and medical sciences research and industries. Researchers in the city have contributed substantially to heart surgery and hand surgery advancements. The earliest artificial heart transplants were performed in Louisville. There is also a downtown medical research campus that has brought 70 top researchers to the city.
