Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis is the largest city in Tennessee and a commercial center for the state. The city’s music oriented culture and numerous successful artists have had a strong influence on American music. Memphis has a population of 670,000. The Greater Memphis metropolitan area has a population of 1,280,533.

It has won the award of the “Nation’s Cleanest City” five times. The city has several business and economic opportunities. It is home to Memphis Medical Center and St. Jude Children’s Hospital; two of the most renowned medical institutions in the nation. It is known as the “Home of the Blues” and the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n Roll. ”

The city is home to three Fortune 500 company headquarters: FedEx, AutoZone, and International Paper. These three companies employ many of Memphis’s residents and significantly contribute to the economy of Memphis. Other sectors of the Memphis economy include banking and finance, real estate, medical science, technology, agribusiness, and food processing. It is also a top tourist destination, and tourism feeds a significant amount of money to the local economy. Memphis is a trading center for the cotton market. 40 percent of the cotton of the United States is traded in the city.

Memphis has a moderate climate that is subject to quick changes. May and October are two of the most pleasant months in Memphis. It receives 48.9 inches of precipitation per year and has an average annual temperature of 62 F. The area of Memphis is 279.3 square miles and the city lies 331 feet above sea level.

The city has several modern and historical attractions. The Chucalissa Archaeological Museum and Village has case exhibits and information about Native farmers and artists who lived in the area from 1000 to 1500 A.D. The site has tours and demonstrations by the Choctaw tribe as well. The Victorian Village has several private museums and sites that show what life was like in the 1800s before the modern technological era. Several homes built in Victorian style can be toured as well.

The music history of Memphis is rich. Jazz, blues, and rock and roll have been strongly influenced by the culture of Memphis. W.C. Handy is considered the father of blues and wrote many of his songs in Memphis. Beale Street is a cultural and historic site where blues music was founded. The street is also a nightclub and blues and jazz district. Memphis is also home to Graceland, Elvis Presley’s former estate. 700,000 people visit Graceland annually and it is set on 14 acres of ground. The rich music and cultural history of Memphis gives the city a unique charm.
