About Minnesota

Minnesota became the 32nd state in 1858. The state capitol of Minnesota is St. Paul with a population of 275,150 people (2005 Census). Minneapolis is the largest city in the state, with 372,811 people (2005 Census). The total population of Minnesota is 5,303,925 people (2010 Census). Minnesota is comprised of 79,610 square miles of hills and lakes for about half the state, rocky ridges and deep lakes in the north, flat plains and prairie in the northwest, and rolling plains and river valleys in the south. The state flower is the lady slipper. The state bird is the common loon.

Minnesota has no state insect or butterfly; however the state fish is the walleye. Minnesota was claimed for Louis XIV in 1679 by Daniel Greysolon, after many explorers had visited the area over time. Minnesota was purchased by the United States in two separate transactions. The first was after the Revolutionary War, when the eastern portion was purchased from Great Britain. The second was twenty years later during the Louisiana Purchase, with the remainder being purchased from France in 1803.

There was then the issue of the northern strip of land that bordered Canada, which had been explored by Zebulon Pike; this area would not be ceded by Britain until 1818. Minnesota has always been rich in natural resources, and the state has stayed true to that heritage by continuing to mine and produce products and mining. The northern part of the state produces over 75 percent of the total iron ore for the United States. The state is also agricultural and produces dairy, corn, wheat, soybeans, oats, raises livestock, and more. Known as the “twin cities” Minneapolis and St. Paul are both very industrious and accomplished cities.

Minneapolis is home to the world’s largest supercomputer and grain distributor, and is the trade center of the Midwestern United States. St. Paul produces the nation’s most calendars and law books. Both cities are hubs and among the largest trucking centers in the nation. Duluth Minnesota is home to the largest inland harbor in the United States, and has become a central source of foreign trade. Rochester Minnesota is home to the famous Mayo Clinic. Minnesota is rich in sports, hunting and fishing, which is a primary source of income for the state. Tourism is not sparse as the numerous forests, lakes, and parks draw millions of tourists every year. Prominent historical and famous people who are from Minnesota include Warren Burger, Bob Dylan, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Charles and William Mayo, Charles Schulz, Prince, and others.
