Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville is the capital of Tennessee and it is located in Davidson County. It is situated on the Cumberland River in the north-central area of Tennessee. The city has a population of 626,144 and it is the second most populous city in Tennessee after Memphis. The metropolitan area has a population of 1,582,264 which is the largest metropolitan area in the state.

Nashville was founded in 1779 and was a fast growing city because of its accessibility as a river port. Later on it became a major railroad center. The city was hurt economically because of the Civil War but soon rebounded because of its location as a shipping and trading hub. Today, Nashville is an economic hub for the banking, music, publishing, transportation, and health care industries.

The Grand Ole Opry was founded in 1925. Even before then the city was well known for being a music publishing city with several record labels. The city earned the nickname “Music City USA” due to the large amount of artists and labels. It was also a major location for the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. The city has experienced steady economic growth since the 1970s, especially during the 1990s.

The climate of Nashville is humid subtropical with short and mild winters and hot and humid summers. Spring and autumn are warm and pleasant but these seasons bring the potential for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. Snowfall is known to occur in Nashville but it is light. Temperatures in Nashville are 10 degrees warmer than the rural areas because of the city being an urban heat island.

Nashville has a large number of colleges and universities. The city is known for being the home of Vanderbilt University. Downtown Nashville features several entertainment, arts, and cultural activities and areas. The Tennessee Performing Arts Center is a major venue for performing arts in the city.

Some of the most popular local acts include the Nashville Ballet, the Nashville Opera, and the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. The city has historically been associated with country music and it is home to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The annual Country Music Awards are also hosted in the city and bring thousands of people to the city every year.

Other annual events include the Nashville Film Festival which occurs for a week in April and features hundreds of independent films, the Country Music Marathon which has over 25,000 runners from around the world, and the Gospel Music Association Dove Awards.
