Oakland, California

Oakland is a city located in the San Francisco Bay area in an area called the East Bay. Oakland is the 8^th largest city in California and has a population of 404,155. Oakland has a high population density and it is a major business and manufacturing center. Oakland has a diverse population. The city’s population is 36.9 percent Caucasian, 31.9 percent African American, and 25.2 percent self-identifying Latino of any race. It is one of the most diverse cities in the United States as a result of this makeup.

Oakland is connected to San Francisco via the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Oakland has 19 miles of coastline on its west side and rolling hills on its east side. The city features several fantastic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Oakland Bay Bridge, and the Pacific coastline.

Oakland’s climate is considered temperate and Mediterranean. The climate is sunny and mild year round because of its further inland location. It has high humidity and low precipitation year round. It is typically 5 degrees or so warmer than San Francisco. Its climate has been ranked highly in various publications. The weather has been described as warmer than San Francisco but cooler than San Jose. Most of the annual rainfall occurs between the months of October and January.

Oakland is a major West Coast port, and the numerous ports are a core component of the economy. The ports employ around 200,000 people alone with a wide range of salaries and wages. The Jack London Square is a popular nighttime destination because of the large number of movie theaters, restaurants, and bars in the area.

Tourist destinations include the Camron-Stanford house, a restored Victorian house on Lake Merritt. Children’s Fairyland is a 3d theme park with over 60 sets that show fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and legends. The Oakland Zoo hosts 440 exotic animals with an African lion exhibit. The Presidential Yacht Potomac was President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s yacht and it can be toured. With proximity to the Bay area and a great climate, Oakland is great place to live and sightsee.
