The population of Oklahoma City is 551,789 and the metropolitan area population is 1,206,142. The city is located in Oklahoma County. It is the eight largest city in terms of land area. It was founded on April 22, 1889 by the U.S. Government who opened the area for settlement, and the city was incorporated in 1890. The economy of Oklahoma City has several major contributors. There was an oil discovery in 1928 that helped to make Oklahoma City’s economy oil dependent. Oklahoma City is a major livestock market. Oklahoma City is a distribution center for the state. The city’s stockyards are the largest feeder cattle market in the world. The economy has diversified since its oil business beginnings and there are now several private service businesses. However, oil, petroleum and natural gas are still major products of the Oklahoma City economy. There are several energy companies that have headquarters in Oklahoma City. The Tinker Air Force Base and federal government are other major employers. The city has a humid subtropical climate with variable weather. The summers are hot and humid and the rest of the seasons change rapidly in temperature. The winters are cold and the city receives 35.9 inches of precipitation per year. There is a severe weather season from March to August with more severe weather occurring during April and May. Oklahoma City has had several tornadoes: eight F4 tornadoes and one F5 tornado. May 3, 1999 saw one of the most powerful tornadoes ever recorded. Oklahoma City has a thriving performance and visual arts community.
