Portland, Oregon Portland is the largest city in Oregon and part of Multnomah County. It is situated on the northwest part of Oregon on the Willamette River. As of 2009, the population for Portland was 582,130. It was a stopping point for Lewis and Clark on their expedition in 1805 and the city was founded in 1845. The city was a base for the California Gold Rush and developed a salmon and lumber industry. It was also a supply point for the Alaska Gold Rush. It is now one of the leading grain exporters and one of top five automobile import centers. The city is very clean and lacks some of the other big city problems such as crime, traffic, and pollution. Portland had several gardens, parks, and fountains situated throughout the city. The city thrives on tourism and it draws in 7 million people per year. Portland has a temperate climate with mild and damp winters and dry, warm summers. It falls within the cool, dry summer subtropical zone. Summers are warm and dry and winters are cool and wet. Spring also receives much rainfall and there are 37.5 inches of rainfall per year in Downtown Portland. Portland has several outdoor public art displays and fountains. Portlandia is a 35 foot tall copper sculpture of a kneeling woman. Ira’s fountain is a water sculpture that sits across from the Civic Auditorium. The Japanese Garden is one of the most authentic Japanese gardens in the nation. The Vineyards in the Willamette Valley are outside of a city and a popular wine tour destination. Portland also has a diverse economy with manufacturing, electronics, metals, transportation, lumber, and other industries. Portland’s high tech center has 1,700 technology companies as well. There is also a wholesale, retail trade, and government sector. The city is ranked as the “Greenest City in America” and is among the top 10 greenest cities in the world. Portland has a legacy for preserving natural land. Forest Park is the largest wilderness park in the United States within city limits with over 5,000 acres. The city also has extinct volcanoes within its boundaries, and Mount Tabor Park is an extinct volcano with scenic views. The Portland Center for the Performing Arts is a popular arts center with annual and monthly events. Performing groups include the Oregon Symphony, Portland Opera, Oregon Ballet Theatre, Portland Youth Philharmonic, and Portland Gay Men’s Chorus. The Portland Art Museum is one of the 25 largest in the country and has 35 centuries of works exhibited. There are Renaissance, 19th and 20th century American, Native American, Asian, and West African art works exhibited. The Northwest Film and Video center shows historical and traditional film exhibits. |
