Raleigh, North Carolina

Raleigh is the capital city of North Carolina. It is the 8^th fastest growing city in America. It has a population of 401,552, and it is the second largest city in North Carolina. Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill are three cities that are part of the Research Triangle metropolitan area. The Raleigh-Durham-Cary Combined Statistical Area had a population of 1,742,816 in 2009 and was the nation’s fastest growing metropolitan area.

Raleigh is located between the Great Smokey Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Raleigh has a humid subtropical climate with mild temperatures during spring and autumn. Summers can be warm to hot in temperature. Raleigh has an annual average of 6.8 inches of snowfall in the winter. Springtime temperatures average 59.3 F, winter averages 38.9 F, fall averages 59.7 F, and summer averages 78.1 F.

Raleigh is a cultural center for performing arts in North Carolina. The Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek is a major venue for touring acts. The Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, Kennedy Theatre, and the Fletcher Opera Theater are some of the other major venues for performances in Raleigh. The North Carolina Symphony is based out of Raleigh as well.

Raleigh has several visual arts buildings with extensive art collections. It is known as the “Smithsonian of the South” and it hosts several art museums. 100,000 artifacts are displayed at the North Carolina Museum of History. Some of the exhibits include antique furniture, period exhibits, arts, crafts, and toys. The North Carolina Museum of Art has art pieces that span over 5,000 years. The museum exhibits several collections of American art, European art, and Ancient art.

Some of the professional sports teams include the Carolina Hurricanes, a national hockey league team, and the Carolina Railhawks FC of the United Soccer Leagues. The local universities in Raleigh are a source of performance and entertainment events as well. Midway between Raleigh and Chapel Hill are Duke, NC State, and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, three major universities and research institutions. College basketball is popular in Raleigh, and the Duke Bluedevils, the North Carolina Tarheels, and the NC State Wolfpack are three popular basketball teams that attract tens of thousands of spectators each year.

Raleigh also has several recreation options such as 8,100 acres of park land, 22 community centers, a BMX caliber racing track, 112 tennis courts, and 5 public lakes. The J.C. Raulston Arboretum is a botanical garden that is free year round and features over 5,000 varities of annuals, perennials, bulbs, vines and other botanicals.
