About Rhode Island

Rhode Island became the 13th state in 1790. The state capitol of Rhode Island is Providence with a population of 176,862 people (2005 Census). Providence is also the largest city in the state, with the second largest being Warwick with 87,233 people (2005 Census). The total population of Rhode Island is 1,052,567 people (2010 Census). Rhode Island is comprised of 1,045 square miles of lowlands in the east, and rolling hills in the west. The state flower is the violet (unofficial). The state bird is the Rhode Island Red hen. Rhode Island began thanks to the exile of clergyman Roger Williams by Massachusetts Bay Colony Puritans in 1636.

Williams established a settlement at what is now Providence. Williams was also followed by others who had been exiled who went on to found Pocasset (Portsmouth) in 1638, and Newport in 1639. Rhode Island has always been known as a rebellious state. In order to defy the authority in which the people there clearly sought their freedom, a series of rebellious acts were carried out. First the burning of British revenue cutters Liberty and Gaspee, then by declaring independence early from Great Britain, then by refusing to participate in the War of 1812, followed by Dorr’s Rebellion in 1842, which was a protest of property rights for voting.

Rhode Island is the smallest state in land size, but makes up for its small size in industry, production, and tourism. Jewelry, electronics, metals, and plastics are all highly produced in the state. Boat and ship construction is another large production. Research is another industry that is heavily employed in the state, with emphasis on ocean environment, medicine and health. Newport and Galilee are large fishing ports and tourist destinations. Newport began seeing an increase in tourism during the 1900’s with high society vacationers.

Since that time, tourism has not decreased in the state, and now tourism accounts for over $1 billion in revenue yearly. Newport is the tourism capital of the state, but other sites such as the Roger Williams National Memorial, Samuel Slater’s Mill, Block Island, and others are popular as well. Prominent historical figures and famous people from Rhode Island include Clarence King, H.P. Lovecraft, Roger Williams, James Woods, and others.
