Seattle, Washington

Seattle is the largest urban area north of San Francisco on the West Coast of the United States. It is a major port and it lies between the Puget Sound on the west and Lake Washington on the east. It is about 100 miles south of the Canada-United States border. It is a part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area which is the 15th largest in the United States.

Seattle is a major economic and cultural center for the Pacific Northwest. The population of Seattle as of 2009 was around 600,000, and the metropolitan area has a population of 4 million. The city was first settled in 1851 by five pioneer families from Illinois. The name Seattle comes from the name of a friendly Suquamish Indian chief. Seattle was incorporated in 1869. It became a major railroad terminus after 1983 when the Great Northern Railway came to the city.

Seattle is a hub for transportation and business. The city’s economy is powered by several industries including manufacturing, finance, aircraft, lumber, high technology, fishing, boat manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and apparel industries. The city has recently become known as a center for green technology research. Seattle announced in February of 2010 that they would attempt to become the first city to reach zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

The climate of Seattle is temperate oceanic with Mediterranean characteristics. It has wet and mild winters and dry and mild summers. The city receives 37.1 inches of precipitation per year, but contrary to common belief, it is not one of the rainiest cities in the nation. It averages 150 days of precipitation per year, and it is cloudy on average of 201 days per year. The rain occurs in light amounts with rare thunderstorms. Downpours are also rare. Seattle’s weather stays around 30-40 F at its coldest during the winter.

The Space Needle is a popular landmark that is 605 feet tall and has an observation deck with great views of the city. Pioneer Square is Seattle’s historic district. Some of the attractions of the district include restored brick buildings that date back to the late 1800s, restaurants, shops, and cobblestone streets.

The Woodland Park Zoo has 1,000 animals with minimal enclosure. Washington Park on the University of Washington’s campus has 200 acres of gardens and a Japanese tea garden. The nearby Puget Sound and Cascade and Olympic Mountains offer numerous outdoor recreation options including hiking, skiing, boating, mountain climbing, snowboarding, kayaking, cycling, and swimming.

Seattle is one of the top tourist destinations in the United States with its historical sites, some of the best outdoors recreation in the nation, cultural events, and performing and visual arts.
