Tulsa, Oklahoma

Tulsa is the second largest city in Oklahoma and it is located in Tulsa County. It has a population of 385,635, and in the Tulsa Metropolitan Combined Statistical Area the total population is 916,079. Tulsa County is the most densely populated county in Oklahoma.

Tulsa’s economy is dependent on the energy, finance, telecommunications, aviation, and technology sectors of the city. The city often experiences severe weather including tornadoes because of its location in Tornado Alley. It is considered the arts center of Oklahoma with two art museums, a full time opera and ballet, and a large concentration of art deco culture.

Tulsa has an international airport, and accounts for 60% of Oklahoma’s exports. The gross product of Tulsa was in the top third of all metropolitan areas in 2001. The economy of Tulsa suffered a recession along with the rest of the nation in 2001 to 2003, however the economy of Tulsa has diversified since then.

Its location in the Northeast corner of Oklahoma gives it a unique geography. It is located between the Great Plains and the Ozark Mountains which gives Tulsa’s landscape rolling hills, prairie, and plains regions. The area is diverse in its topography.

Tulsa has a temperate climate with an average annual temperature of 60.8 F and average precipitation of 42.4 inches. The city is subject to severe thunderstorms during the spring and early summer. The city has the potential for major flooding, and it has an advanced flood control system after a 1984 flood destroyed $180 million worth of property and killed 14 people.

The architecture of Tulsa is quite interesting. Because of a construction boom in the early 20th century there is a large concentration of art deco architecture. Oral Roberts University is built in a post-modern futuristic style with gold structures and unique building shapes. The BOK Center, was designed by the same architect who designed the Petronas Towers in Malaysia. It is a new arena in Tulsa that incorporates art deco, Native American, and contemporary art styles in its architectural makeup.

Tusla has a number of sports options including two NCAA Division I colleges with a range of sports and numerous minor league sports teams. Golf is also a popular sport in Tulsa with some of the nation’s highest rated golf courses. College sports such as basketball, football, and baseball are very popular spectator events. Also, running and cycling is a popular pastime in Tulsa with an annual Tulsa marathon featuring over 8,000 runners.
