About Vermont

Vermont became the 14th state in 1791. The state capitol of Vermont is Montpelier with a population of 8,003 people (2005 Census). Burlington is the largest city in the state, with 38,531 people (2005 Census). The total population of Vermont is 625,741 people (2010 Census). Vermont is comprised of 9,250 square miles of Green mountain backbone running north to south. The state flower is the red clover. The state bird is the hermit thrush. The state insect of Vermont is the honeybee. Vermont was first explored in 1609 by France’s Samuel de Champlain.

The first settlement was established in 1666by France near Fort Ste. Anne. In 1724, the first English settlers came to the area and subsequently built Fort Dummer, which is now known as Brattleboro. The area was acquired by the United States after the French and Indian Wars in 1763. Ethan Allen led The Green Mountain boys to capture Fort Ticonderoga in 1775 from the British. This organization was originally designed to drive New York settlers from Vermont in the early days of the Revolutionary War.

Vermont has remained an industry leader in the production of monument granite, marble, talc, and maple syrup. The rocky and rugged landscape make farming difficult, however fruit tree orchards and dairy farms abound in Vermont. Printing, publishing, paper, and metal products are prominent industries for Vermont.

Vermont is known for its maple syrup and maple candies, etc. This is one of the draws for tourists. Other draws for tourists include skiing in areas like Stow, Killington, Jay Peak, and Mt. Snow. Hunting and fishing are also popular sports for tourists. Other historical landmarks and parks are also popular destinations for tourists.
