Virginia Beach Medical Information for Health Professionals

Virginia Beach, Virginia has a diverse variety of things to do aside from spending time at the beach. A number of festivals take place in Virginia Beach that celebrate beer, family, strawberries, aircraft, music, wine and more.

In addition to the numerous festivals, visitors and residents can spend time at the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Town Point Park, Norfolk Botanical Gardens, the Virginia Zoo, the Great Dismal Swamp, Nightmare House on Atlantic Avenue, False Cape State Park and Busch Gardens Old Country.

The state of Virginia has an uninsured rate that is lower than the national average, but a low immunization rate for children (19 to 35 months old). Virginia is about average when it comes to obesity rates and binge drinking rates but has the sixth lowest rate of violent crime in the nation.

Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital offers 282 beds and is a Level III Trauma Center-the only one in the region. It is also where you will find the Sentara Heart Center. It also houses a cancer center, a sleep disorder center, an inpatient rehabilitation unit and services in orthopedics.

Started in 1978, Regent University awarded just over 1100 degrees in the 2010 to 2011 school year. Regent has received recognition from a variety of sources including The Princeton Review and G.I. Jobs and Military Advanced Education magazine. Additionally, a number of ‘famous faces’ have graduated from Regent, including Cheryl McKay and Governor Bob McDonnell.

Some of the areas of study available at Regent are psychology, homeland and international security, criminal justice and elementary education.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Virginia Beach is located in the metropolitan area of Virginia. It is one of the fastest growing cities on the East Coast of the United States. It is situated at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay on the Atlantic Ocean. It has an estimated population of 440,415 (2008). It is one of the Seven Cities of the Hampton Roads. The other cities are Norfolk, Chesapeake, Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth, and Suffolk. These 7 cities are expected to grow faster than expected over the next few years. The area is called “America’s First Region. ”

The climate of Virginia Beach is very favorable with four moderate seasons. The climate is humid subtropical and temperatures are moderated due to the ocean’s effect on the weather. The average annual temperature is 73 F with average annual rainfall of 45 inches. Spring and summer receive the most rainfall and it rains year round. Winters are very mild with rare snowfall. Summers are humid and hot.

Virginia Beach is a common tourist destination and it is a resort city. It has 28 miles of public beaches and hundreds of hotels, motels, and restaurants. There are a number of employers in the area including military and agribusiness sectors. GEICO, Amerigroup, and Navy Exchange Service Command are other employers. Tourism also keeps the economy strong with $857 million spent on tourism industries and 14,000 jobs created from tourism alone. 2.75 million tourists visit the city annually. Some major companies that have headquarters in Virginia Beach include Lillian Vernon and Sithl.

Virginia Beach has over 210 city parks with 4,000 acres of land. Mount Trashmore Park is a 165 acre park that was created from compacted waste and soil. It is the first park in the world to be created from a landfill. The park has two lakes: Lake Windsor and Lake Trashmore. The Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge has sand dunes, forests, water marshes and is over 8,000 acres. First Landing State Park and False Cape State Park are located within the city and are excellent camping locations with every amenity for camping available.

Virginia Beach is has some sporting events as well such as the East Coast Surfing Championships and the North American Sand Soccer Championship which is a beach soccer tournament. It is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as having the longest pleasure beach in the world. Because of Virginia Beach’s moderate taxes, several job opportunities, and excellent climate the city is growing quickly in population.
