About Wyoming

Wyoming became the 44th state in 1890. The state capitol of Wyoming is Cheyenne with a population of 55,731 people (2005 Census). Cheyenne is also the largest city in the state, with the second largest being Casper with 51,738 people (2005 Census). The total population of Wyoming is 563,626 people (2010 Census). Wyoming is comprised of 97,100 square miles of Great Plains in the east rising to the Rocky Mountains. The Continental Divide runs from northwest to southeast across the state. The state flower is the Indian paintbrush. The state bird is the western meadowlark.

Wyoming was acquired by the United States during the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. A fur trapper, John Colter, is thought to be the first white man to explore the region. The area now known as Yellowstone was discovered in 1807 and Colter took the news of the hot springs and geysers back with him. The Oregon Trail was established through the area in 1812-13, and shortly thereafter For Laramie was established as the first trading post. The western portion of the state was not acquired by the United States until 1846 under the Oregon Treaty.

The Wyoming Territory was established in 1869, and was the first territory to allow women the right to vote. Nellie Tayloe Ross became the first woman in the United States to become governor in 1925. The landscape of Wyoming is vast and open with plains and grazing pastureland. This terrain is ideal for raising livestock such as cattle and sheep. The most prominent industry in Wyoming remains mining. Oil and natural gas are both in rich supply, as are sodium carbonate deposits. Wyoming also has the largest supply of uranium deposits.

In recent years, Wyoming has become a large supplier of wool for the United States (second in the nation to Texas). The landscape is not only rich for livestock and minerals, but also tourism. Yellowstone National Park is among the most prominent and iconic sites, along with the Teton Range, Fort Laramie, Jackson Hole, and others. There are many natural landmarks and scenic sites in the state across the diverse terrain. Prominent historical figures and famous people from Wyoming include John Colter, Esther Morris, Ted Olson, Jackson Pollock, Jedediah Smith, James Watt, and others.
